Chopped basalt fibre24 ± 1 mm

Chopped basalt strands are produced from volcanic basalt rock and coated with X-SBR (styrene-butadiene). They are dispersed through concrete, mortar or asphalt mixes. The fibres help bridge small cracks and can contribute to toughness and crack control, depending on the mix design, dosage and dispersion.

PRODUCT OVERVIEW

MATERIAL FUNCTION
& PERFORMANCE.

X-SBR coated chopped basalt strands for concrete, mortar and asphalt mixes, including floors, precast elements and pavements. Performance depends on the complete design, material compatibility and installation.

01

Distributed reinforcement

Fibres are mixed throughout the material rather than installed as a continuous grid.

02

Crack control

Fibre bridging can help restrain the growth of small cracks in a properly designed mix.

03

Toughness

Potential improvements in impact and post-crack behaviour depend on dosage and the base mix.

04

Non-metallic fibres

The basalt reinforcement does not rust like steel fibres. Long-term performance depends on the exposure and mix.

MIX DESIGN INPUTS

Application-specific dosage.

Published guidelines for planning a trial mix. Confirm the dosage and mixing procedure with the responsible designer before use.

Application-specific dosage guidelines / replacement flyer, page 2
ApplicationGuideline dosage
Residential concrete floors1.5 to 2.5 kg/m³
Industrial floors2.5 to 4.0 kg/m³
Warehouse slabs3.0 to 5.0 kg/m³
Concrete pavements3.0 to 6.0 kg/m³
Thin concrete roads4.0 to 6.0 kg/m³
Precast elements2.0 to 4.0 kg/m³
Asphalt mixes3 to 5 kg per tonne of asphalt

These are the flyer’s detailed table values. Its combined industrial and warehouse summary gives a broader range; use the separate application rows above. Final dosage is subject to mix design and the engineer’s specification. Confirm through project-specific mix trials.

BEFORE YOU START

Mixing considerations.

Use these as planning points alongside the approved project specification and supplier instructions.

  1. Confirm the fibre specification, intended performance and trial dosage with the mix designer.
  2. Follow the supplier’s mixing sequence and disperse fibres uniformly to avoid clumping.
  3. Check workability, finishing and compaction on a trial batch.
  4. Validate the required performance with the approved mix and test programme.
PRODUCT QUESTIONS

More about
chopped basalt fibre.

What is the difference between fibre and mesh?

Chopped fibre is dispersed throughout a mix. Mesh is a continuous grid installed at a defined position within a pavement or layerworks system. The two products serve different reinforcement functions.

How much basalt fibre should be added?

The replacement flyer gives application-specific guidelines, including 2.0 to 4.0 kg/m³ for precast elements and 3 to 5 kg per tonne of asphalt. Refer to the dosage table for the intended application. Final dosage depends on mix design and the responsible engineer’s specification.

Where can I get current product specifications?

The specification table and downloadable replacement flyer list the current published figures. The flyer specifies breaking strength of at least 1,000 MPa and reports a tested value of 1,420 MPa. These are fibre properties, not the strength of the finished concrete or asphalt. Request the underlying test report for your project.

Can fibre replace the specified reinforcing steel?

Do not assume a direct substitution. Any change to structural reinforcement requires a design assessment and approval by the responsible engineer.
